Ben Schmidt and Chris Dodd Victorious on Night Three of Hopf Farms Bullring Showdown

After a long and grueling Saturday night in Illinois, 20 Bumper to Bumper winged 410 teams signed in to compete at 141 Speedway for night three of the Hopf Farms Bullring Showdown. The winged teams were joined by 26 Wisconsin wingLESS sprint cars.

Qualifying saw “The Northpole Nightmare” Bill Balog set quick time over Ben Schmidt. Scotty Thiel, was third quick, in a car that was not complete until just hours before. Jordan Goldesberry and Mike Reinke timed in fourth and fifth respectively. In wingLESS qualifying, Tim Cox bested the field, followed by Jimmy Sivia and Ryan Zielski. Derek Crane would time in fourth and series point leader Chris Dodd was fifth quick.

The wingLESS division would be first up for heat races, and in heat number one Johnny Fahl was victorious over quick qualifier and fourth starting Tim Cox. Derek Crane was third across the line followed by Shawn Swim and Chris Klemko.

The second heat race was won by Greg Olsen behind the wheel of his 9 machine, the 91 of Jimmy Sivia was second. A trio of feature winners in 2019 rounded out the top five as Chris Dodd, Rusty Egan and Zach Raidart crossed the line.

In the third heat, Ryan Zielski charged from fourth to the lead and was able to pick up the win. Randy Stanford would finish second over Allen Hafford. Illinois native Charles Spoonmore finished in fourth and Zach Hanson was fifth.

Next it was time for the winged cars to run heat races, and in the first one a trio of former champions did battle, as 2 time IRA champion Scotty Neitzel took the win over 2016 champion Jeremy Schultz. 8 time Champion Bill Balog settled for third over Jordan Goldesberry and Scott Biertzer.

The second heat race saw Ben Schmidt work his way from the fourth starting position around the field and into the lead, grabbing the checkered flag. Russel Borland would finish in secpnd, in front of Schmidt’s teammate Joey Moughan. Todd Daun finished in fourth and Jereme Schroeder brought his Bumper to Bumper of Paddock Lake 43 home in fifth.

The final heat race of the night saw another charge from fourth to first, this time in only a couple laps, as Scotty Thiel drove to the lead. Thiel took the win followed by Steve Meyer and Mike Reinke. Kris Spitz would finish in fourth and Nick Matuszewski finished fifth.

With preliminary action finished, the Auto Meter Wisconsin wingLESS series took back to the high banks of 141 speedway for feature action. Chris Dodd, behind the wheel of his Hopf Farms 01 jumped out to the early lead and never looked back. Dodd would lead all twenty laps in route to the win. Ryan Zielski finished in second over another Hopf Farms backed entry piloted by Allen Hafford. Derek Crane and Tim Cox rounded out the top five.

To close the night the Winged 410s hit the track for their feature. Ben Schmidt, driving the Oz Motorsports 73 led flag to flag, claiming the win. Bill Balog who early in the feature was as far back as seventh position worked his way into the second spot, but did not have the muscle to make his way past Schmidt and was forced to settle for second spot. Jeremy Schultz, rebounding from a hard flip less than 24 hours prior finished on the bottom step of the podium. Fourth place was grabbed by tenth starting Joey Moughan, while Scotty Thiel finished in fifth.
