ROSE INHERITS POINT LEAD AS SEVEN IRA EVENTS REMAIN ON 2015 SECHEDULE!
August 30, 2015; Sun Prairie, WI – Danny “The Dude” Lasoski of Dover, Missouri went into the record books as the winner of the first ever showdown between the Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprints and the FVP National Sprint League. The former World of Outlaw champion, and current NSL point leader took advantage of a late race restart to slip past Brad Loyet of Sunset Hills, Missouri with nine laps remaining in the 30 lap A-main.
It marked the second consecutive runner-up finish for Loyet in IRA competition as Roger Crockett had slipped past Loyet at LaSalle Speedway the night before for the win. For Lasoski the win was his fifth career victory in limited IRA action, The sprint car hall of fame inductee had his last victory in IRA action come during a co-sanctioned WoO event at Beaver Dam Raceway in 2009.
This evening’s show drew to a close a very successful 69th season of racing at the Angell Park Speedway that had showcased five Bumper to Bumper IRA events during the year. Each contest nearly filling the stands.
For the most part IRA regulars were stymied this evening. The notable exception was Bill Balog. The seven-time series champion has run a limited schedule this season. He has been traveling to major events throughout the region had has recorded four IRA victories in IRA competition thus far in 2015. Balog started the night by setting the all-time track record at Angell Park Speedway with a blistering 11.985 second orbit around the third-mile clay oval. He later came back with a fourth place finish after a thrilling late race duel with multi-time USAC champion Bryan Clauson.
Blake Nimee was the only other driver with IRA tie to crack the top ten. Nimee spent much of the contest clawing his way forward from his 17th place starting spot moving as high as the eighth place before drifting back to tenth in the closing stages of the race.
Mike Reinke made the comeback of the evening, suffering a setback early in the program. With mechanical ills coming into play Reinke had to withdraw from his heat. His team managed to solve the issues in time to compete in the B-main. Reinke then made the most of that opportunity to pull away from the field taking a convincing with it earning a spot in the main event. Reinke then battled for a top ten position throughout the contest eventually having to settle for the 11th spot at the finish.
Other IRA regulars to make the show included Bill Rose, Steve Meyer, Scotty Neitzel, Kyle Marten, Phillip Mock, and Jordan Goldesberry.
The weekend proved pivotal in the season point chase with Ben Schmidt suffering mechanical ills at LaSalle that allowed Rose to take over the series point lead by a slim margin. Schmidt suffered a further setback this evening as a borrowed ride also developing mechanical ills.
With appearance points coming into play this tonight at Angell Park none of the teams in the point battle would take any major hit in their championship efforts.
The title chase resumes in earnest next Sunday at 141 Speedway with a full point show.
The 30-lap A-main this evening had incredible star power with a 24 car-starting grid ready for action. It would not be a stretch to say that among the field of starters that well over 500 victories and dozens of championships were represented in the starting field.
Loyet who had earned the pole position, became the initial leader of the contest with Tim Kaeding, and Lasoski giving chase. On lap five Lynton Jeffrey lost his nose wing in turn two resulting in a caution for debris. Jeffrey would continue the contest sans nose wing and still finish a respectable 12th place in the main event.
On the restart Loyet again paced the contest with Kaeding challenging, and Lasoski waiting for an opportunity to advance.
Lapped traffic provided an additional challenge for the leaders as Loyet diced through back markers. On lap 17 Matt Juhl attempted to move up the track to allow Loyet past and in doing so he tagged the wall doing a quick flip exiting turn four. This forced the only red flag of the contest. Juhl emerged unhurt but was done for the evening.
On the restarted Loyet again held tight to the lead but Kaeding wound up falling to the pressure of Lasoski who took over the second spot.
On lap 21 the cars of Reinke, and Austin McCarl got tangled up forcing the final slowdown. McCarl was sidelined in the incident while Reinke was able to rejoin the event as the final car on the lead lap.
The nine-lap shoot-out gave Lasoski the opportunity he needed. On the restart Lasoski immediately pulled off a slider on Loyet to take over the front running position. In the distance to the finish Lasoski away able to open a small margin over Loyet who managed to fight off Kaeding for second. Kaeding was the final podium finisher in third.
Fourth place became a contest of willpower as Balog, and Clauson ran wing to wing to the line. Balog earned the position by less than a foot, a fourth place effort. Earlier in the evening Balog managed to earn a third place finish in midget competition. Clauson completed the top five finishers.
NSL regulars Ian Madsen, Logan Forler, Terry McCarl, and Brian Brown captured sixth through ninth respectively. Nimee represented the IRA banner with the final top ten spot.
In earlier action a stout B-main was captured by Reinke, with Kody Kinser, Tasker Phillips and Phillip Mock earning a spot in the main event with a top four finish. Wayne Modjeski,and Jeremy Schultz did battle just outside the top four, with Modjeski holding on to fifth becoming the first alternate for the big show.
Austin McCarl was pressed for the win by Nimee in the first heat while Austin’s father Terry captured the second heat race over Steve Meyer after Meyer slowed on the final lap of the event with mechanical difficulties. Ian Madsen captured the third heat in dominating fashion. IRA point leader Bill Rose earned the win in the fourth and final heat race.
42 cars attempted qualification runs this evening with Balog’s new record of 11.985 seconds setting the pace. Clauson was second quick with a lap of 12.004 and Lasoski was third fast with a 12.048 second qualifying effort. All three drivers broke the old standard set by Jordan Goldesberry just one week ago when he turned in a 12.059 second qualifying effort.
The Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprints now head to 141 Speedway for an event next Sunday evening, September 6th. The tight quarter-mile bullring located in Northeastern Wisconsin is known for dramatic wing to wing action and it’s a can’t miss entertainment value for Labor Day weekend family fun.
